We perform this technique mainly on patients with slightly to moderately droopy eyelids and as adjunct procedures in aesthetic eyelid surgery. The procedure takes only about 15-20 minutes and is completely ambulatory. The patient has to apply an antibiotic ointment and coolpacks the first few days post-operatively. Average daily activities and non-physically strenuous work can be resumed quickly. In other words, there is minimal downtime.
This technique already exists for many years with suture placement, making it a trustworthy procedure. The advantage of using a suture is that the effect is immediate, but there are some downsides to it as well; some people experience pain and damage to their cornea because of the suture rubbing over the eye when the eye moves or during blinking. To prevent this problem, a contactlens is normally placed on the eye after the surgery to protect it, but this lens also has to be removed and antibiotic eyedrops have to be used during the period of contactlens wear to prevent eye infections. Also, the suture is visible on the outside of the eyelid during the first week.
Therefore we implemented this sutureless technique with which we have reached a good effect, without placing the visible suture, without the need of placing a contact lens and without any problems with the cornea. If you want to know more about this technique and whether you are a candidate for this procedure, do not hesitate to make an appointment with dr. van der Veen at one of the clinics.
